The festival of Gangaur
is very significant for women of Rajasthan. It is a time
for them to dress up in their best and participate in
the festival.
Women gather to dress the
images of Isar and Ganguar and then carry them in
a ceremonial procession through different parts of the
city. The procession winds its way to Gangur Ghat at Lake
Pichhola. Here, the images are transferred to
special boats amidst much singing and festivity. Once
the religious part of the festival is over it is time
for cultural events where Rajasthan's culture is
portrayed through songs, dances culminates with an
impressive fireworks display. |

Life
in the town of Nagaur starts bustling every year with
the thronging of cattle, horses and camels accompanied
by their owners and buyers. The cattle fair held
here annually is supposed to be one of the largest in
the world.
Nagaur
bulls are renowned for their fleet-footedness and
therefore, attract buyers from all over. The day starts
with buyers and sellers engaged in earnest bargains.
Once of the price of a horse, bullock or a camel has
been settled, engaged in earnest bargains. Once the
price of a house, bullock or a camel has been settled,
the day closes with dances, songs and merrymaking.

The Elephant festival gets
underway in the month of Phalgun (March) on the eve of Holi,
the festival of colours at Jaipur. The festival
begins with a procession of elephants, camels, horses
and folk dancers. The sight of mighty jumbos stridiing
majestically is a treat to watch. The 'mahawats'
or owners, proudly decorate their elephant with bright
colours, jhools (Saddle cloth) and heavy jewellery.
Female elephants are made to wear payals or anklets,
which jingle as they walk . Prize are given away for the
most beautiful decorated elephant. The Polo Match, the
Elephant Race, the Tug-of -War between elephant and men
and women prompt applause from the spectators. The most
colourful part of the festival is Holi played on
elephant back. |
