Rao Jodha, who claimed descent from Lord Rama founded Jodhpur in 1459. One of Rao Jodha' son Bika, later established Bikaner. Rao Ganga Singh of Jodhpur (1516-32) joined hands with Rana Sangha of Mewar against the Mughal emperor Babar. Later, emperor Akbar won over the rulers of Jodhpur and it become a center of art  under the Mughals. For a short span Jodhpur came under the Marathas and then under the British rule in 1818. The fort is here is known by the name Mehrangarh Fort and is situated about 400 ft above the city thus dominating the surroundings. The seven successive gateways were built as a deterrent to any invader. The wall are 68ft wide and 117 ft high at places. Rao Jodha and his successors constructed the palaces in the Mehrangarh Fort . The Phool Mahal , Moti Mahal, Chandan Mahal and Darbar Takht ornate.  


Forts & Palaces of Bikaner - Rajasthan

The foundation of the fort was laid in 1156or Trikuta hill by the Bhatti chief Jaisal. The fort called Sonar Kila or Golden Fort (shown above) is made of yellow sandstone, and seems to ignite into a golden flame when scorched by the desert sun. 

There is a cross cultural merging of Rajput and Islamic building styles. There are Rana Mahal,Gaj Villas and Moti Mahal which have balconies and cupolas with finely executed carvings and tracery. Jaisalmer is renowned for its havelis. The major ones are Nathmalji-ki-Haveli, Patwon ki-Haveli and Salim Singh -ki-Haveli.

Palaces of Chittaurgarh - Rajasthan

The history of Chittaurgarh revolves around its ancient fort which is traced to the reign of the Sisodia ruler Bappa Rawal (AD 734-53). The saga of Chittaurgarh is full of legends of valour and chivalary and rules like Rana Kumbha, Rana Sangha and Rana Pratap are revered every today. 

Chittaurgarh is the most important fort in Rajasthan. Built on a long rugged hill and covering over 280 hectares with its fortifications, palaces, tower and temples, it has a history of grimness juxtaposed with glory and was the capital of Mewar for eight hundred years.
