Shimla: A quaint little hill train chugs up into the Shivalik foothills, over dramatic loops and high arched bridges to the hill resort of Shimla (2130 m) - the capital of the mountain state of Himachal. Shimla was one a string of hill stations that the British established to escape from the scorching heat of the plains. The 12 km, crescentshaped ridge on which it is located was first occupied by the British troops, in the early part of the 19th century, during the Anglo-Gurkha War.

 

 Shimla's salubrious climate, easy accessibility and numerous attractions have made it one of the most popular hill stations in northern India. Dharamsala: Dharamsala is the main hill station in the Kangra Valley - a fertile, undulating valley, lying between the gentle Shivalik Hills and the foothills of the mighty Dhauladhars - a valley noted for the beauty of its scenery - lush terraces, wooded hills, manicured tea gardens and sparkling streams. The Dhauladhars, "the white mountains" that rise 4,000 m above the valley floor, provide a dramatic backdrop.

The headquaters of his holiness The Dalai Lama is here in Mcleodganj, in Dharamshala often called the "Little Lhasa" at 1770 m, this is the residence of HH The dalai Lama. The Tibetan GOvt. in textile has been here for over three decades. The impressive monastey has larger than life images of the Buddha Padmasambhava and avalokiteshwara. The large tibetan community and the presence of traditional archtectural designs drawn from Tibet have enhanced the area. A host of Tibetan handicrafts, curious and garments are available on sale and every sunday. a fleammarket operates.

Leh: Leh, The capital of ladakh is situated at height of 3505 meters spilling out of a side valley that tapers north towards eroded snow-capped peaks, the ladakhi capital sprawls from the foot of a ruined tibetan style palace- a maze of mud brick and concrete flanked on one side by cream- coloured desert, and on the other by a swathe of lush irrigated farmland. Leh is a beautiful destination with so many attraction and is the center of tibet buddhist culture for ages. Its colorful gompas have attracted the devout buddhists from all over the globe. Besides it is also a fvorite hiking locale and is known for some of the best hikes in the country.

GOLF:At Naldera, 23 km. from beyond Shimla is one of the oldest golf courses in India. The course, whose topography is absolutely natural, was originally placed by the British Viceroy of India,Golf Lord Curzon, at the turn of the centuary. He was so enhanted by the spot that he named one of his daughters 'Naldera' after the spot. This is a par 68, nine hole course which is regarded as one of the most challenging in the country. There are other hotels in the private sector near Naldera.

Skking:Kufri, near Shimla is one of the oldest places in India to be associated with skiing and the slopes are still in use during winter. Above Kufri, the Mahasu ridge also has good slopes. Comprehensive facilities exist at Narkanda, 64 km from Shimla. There is a range of slopes, including a beginer's run, an advanced slope and a slalom run. Himachal Tourism offers ski courses, instruction and has equipment on hire at Narkanda.

Ice- Scating:The Shimla ice-skating rink has the largest open-air area with naturally frozen ice in this part of the world. The Ice Skating Club has already celebrated its Diamond Jubilee.
