Ancient
kingdoms, long-lived dynasties and great
emperors: Northern India was witness to all
these. In Delhi and Agra lay the heart of the
Mughal Empire. With its central location and
strategic importance, Delhi was the chosen
capital of ancient and medieval kingdoms long
before the Mughals, and after them too. Not so
far away, smaller independent Rajput kingdoms
thrived in the deserts of erstwhile Rajputana.
Jaipur and Udaipur were capitals for two such
Rajput kingdoms. Everywhere one can see ancient
and medieval historical monuments rubbing
shoulders with more recent colonial influences.
In Delhi and in Agra as well, one can see some
of the finest architectural contributions to
world culture. There is the Taj Mahal that needs
absolutely no introduction, the Red Fort of
Delhi, the Qutub Minar, and a myriad others
forts and buildings built for defence or to
commemorate a victory. In addition there are
fascinating modern museums which preserve and
document this incredible heritage. The beauty of
Jaipur lies in its unique architecture and town
planning, visible in almost every square and
lane of the old city. Jaipur or the pink city’s
forts and palaces and delirously colourful
bazaars keep alive the culture and glory of the
old Kachchawa kingdom. Udaipur with its five
beautiful lakes, lush green hills, exotic
palaces forts, gardens and temples epitomises an
oasis in the desert. This trip brings the
richness of the royal past of each of these
cities in a single tapestry of experience. |
